Pangong Lake, also known as Pangong Tso, is one of the most stunning high-altitude lakes in India. Located at an altitude of about 4,350 meters (14,270 ft), it stretches for nearly 134 km, with almost 60% of the lake lying in Tibet (China) and the rest in Ladakh, India. The name “Pangong” is derived from the Tibetan word Pangong Tso, meaning “high grassland lake.”
What makes Pangong truly unique is its ever-changing shades of blue—from azure to turquoise and even green—depending on the time of day and season. Despite being a saline water lake, it freezes completely in the harsh winter months, offering a surreal view.
Historical Significance
Pangong has been a site of cultural, trade, and geopolitical importance for centuries.
Trade Route: In ancient times, it was part of the Silk Route, connecting Ladakh with Tibet. Caravans carrying wool, salt, and yak products passed by its shores.
Strategic Importance: In recent history, Pangong has been in the spotlight due to its location along the India-China border (LAC). The area has seen multiple military stand-offs, making it significant not only for tourism but also for defense.
Cultural Value: For the local Changpa nomads, the lake and its surrounding meadows have been vital for grazing livestock, especially yaks and goats.
